By post-World War III standards Jim Barrons had a pretty good life, until the raiders came. Ever since, his time as a destitute orphan in the slums of Pharm Co. City has been hard and cruel.
The promise he made to his dying mother prevents him from doing the dirty activities most in his position would do to survive. Jim becomes a mercenary, not to get back at those who wronged him, but hoping to work his way up into some semblance of safety.
