About the Author

Chenita Barber Johnson is Vice-President of the Winston-Salem African American Archive, an educational and history repository of local historical African American artifacts and documents. As part of the WSAAA she aids in the investigations and documentations of all aspects of African American history in Winston-Salem and Forsyth County, NC from the county’s inception until present. She also works with the Friends of Oddfellows, INC. This organization works to preserve the historical African American Oddfellows Cemetery located in Winston-Salem, NC.
Johnson is also an advocate for public education, a cofounder of Coalition for Equity in Public Education, and a community activist.
Born and raised in Winston-Salem, NC she attended the local public schools however, due to her mother’s employment with the Federal Government she also attended school in Danville, VA, graduated from high school in Parkersburg, WV as well as attending Marshall University in Huntington, WV. When she returned to Winston-Salem, she attended and graduated from Winston-Salem State University with a degree in Political Science/Public Administration with a minor in History.

Johnson was inspired by her mother and maternal grandmother, to understand the empowerment of owning and telling our history . She was also taught that it is the responsibility of us all to understand the importance and impact of African American history in our local, state and national history. Recognizing that African American history is not only important to the growth of the entire community, it is a part of the community. She hopes the information within these pages will allow you, the reader, to feel the same inspiring empowerment of owning and telling your history in your community.
