Purpose: The text presents a compendium of information for civilian and military physicians.
Audience: Practitioners of aeromedical transport are, appropriately, the targeted audience for this book. Both military and civilian physicians and allied health practitioners would benefit. Editors and authors represent a senior physician group in the military medical establishment of the United States.
Features: Twenty-five chapters and an index are included in approximately 400 pages of this hardbound text. Initial chapters describe triage and staging considerations while later material discusses specific medical considerations in patients with torso, neurologic and orthopedic injuries. Patients with less common conditions including pediatric and medical emergencies are also reviewed. Chapters are presented in a clear factual style with ample use of tables and line drawings. Black-and-white photographs are also included. These reproduce with inconsistent quality. Reference lists include primary and secondary sources dating to within three years of publication. The table of contents divides chapters into topic groups and includes authorship. A fifteen-page index concludes the book.
Assessment: This text provides a succinct and effective discussion of medical considerations and logistics of patient transport.
