About the Author

Dr. Arun Kumar is Adjunct Research Professor, Department of Earth Science, Carleton University, Ottawa, Canada. He received his first Ph.D. (Stratigraphic Palynology) from Michigan State University, USA and another Ph.D. (Environmental Micropalaeontology) from Carleton University, Canada. He held post-doctoral positions at Sheffield University, England and Nagasaki University, Japan. Prof. Kumar has wide experience of teaching geology at Kumaun University, India; University of West Indies, Jamaica; Carleton University and Concordia University, Canada and King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals, Saudi Arabia. He also worked as a geologist and palynologist with Oil and Natural Gas Corporation, India and Core Laboratories International (USA) in Singapore and Indonesia. He has published extensively on Mesozoic and Cenozoic pollen, spores and dinoflagellate cysts, environmental applications of thecamoebians, benthic foraminifera as paleoclimate and paleoceanographic proxies, and on current environmental issues. His new research interest is in natural hazards. He has recently co-edited a special issue of the journal Natural Hazards on paleotsunami.
Dr. Helder I. Chamin? is Coordinator Professor, Geotechnical Department, Institute of Engineering of Polytechnic of Porto (ISEP), Portugal and senior researcher at Research Centre GeoBioTec|University of Aveiro. He obtained Ph. D. in Geology (geodynamics and cartography) from the University of Porto, and D. Sc. in rock mechanics at University of Aveiro, Portugal. Dr. Chamin? worked more than 12 years with several engineering companies in mining geology, geomechanics, structural geology, rock engineering, and hard-rock hydrogeology before joining ISEP. He is the Director of the master course of geotechnical and geoenvironmental engineering and vice-president of the Geotechnical Engineering Department at ISEP, as well as invited professor of the Doctoral Course at Aveiro University. Prof. Chamin? is a fellow of the board of the Portuguese Association of Geomorphologists (APGeom) and member of several professional and scientific associations. The results of his research have been published in more than 150 national and international journals, and also co-edited 4 conference books. He is also editorial/advisory board member of several International journals.
