By comprehensively and clearly covering all details of rural surgical practice, from operative indications to operative techniques, and concluding with postoperative care, it will increase rural surgeons' expertise and improve the quality of patient care. The well-illustrated book is supported by current references and consequently, it is highly recommended to practicing rural surgeons of today.
Purpose: The unavoidable, expanded scope of practice for rural surgeons has not been addressed in a textbook and atlas. The authors recognized this fact and wrote this book to rectify the deficiency. Their efforts resulted in this go-to standard for rural surgeons.
Audience: Written for practicing rural surgeons, this book focuses on their broad general surgical practices. It truly hits the target and is destined to become the standard reference for rural surgeons. The authors have both rural and urban referral practices of rural patients, and they have selected chapter authors who possess expertise in the same settings.
Features: This book covers the full spectrum of rural surgical practice, which is truly the last bastion of general surgery. The organization of each chapter is well done, following the identical pattern of introduction, principles, preoperative care, technique, postoperative care, pitfalls, complications, transfer indications, and references. The illustrations are outstanding and are exemplified in the chapter, "Surgical Management of Skin Neoplasias of the Face." Future editions could offer more details about orthopedics.
Assessment: During my training and early career, like many other surgeons, I relied on Atlas of Technics in Surgery, 2nd edition, John L. Madden (Appleton-Century-Crofts, 1964). This book is immediately the most useful reference and soon to be the most relied upon for this generation of rural surgeons.
