Constance Dahlin is the Director of Professional Practices at the Hospice and Palliative Nurses Association; a Palliative Care Consultant at the Center to Advance Palliative Care in New York, New York; and a Nurse Practitioner at the Palliative Care Service, North Shore Medical Center. Patrick J. Coyne, MSN, ACHPN, ACNS-BC, FAAN, FPCN, is the Director of Palliative Care at the Medical University of South Carolina. Betty R. Ferrell is a Professor and Director of Nursing Research and Education in the Department of Population Sciences, at the City of Hope Comprehensive Cancer Center in Duarte, California.

Description: This is the first, and currently the only, book devoted to advance practice palliative care nursing. It is comprehensive, covering an array of topics including the physical, social, psychological, and spiritual needs of patients and families. This book builds on the previously published Oxford Textbook of Palliative Nursing, 4th edition, Ferrell et al. (Oxford University Press, 2015), promoting consistency in practice by describing an integrated approach to care.
Purpose: Advanced practice palliative care nurses have played a pivotal role in the development of palliative care programs in the U.S., but, until now, their role has largely been minimized in palliative care books. The editors hope that this book will strengthen the understanding of the breadth and scope of advanced practice palliative nursing. It offers advanced practice content and practical resources for clinical practice across all settings of care and encompassing all ages, from pediatrics to geriatrics.
Audience: This is intended for graduate nursing students, practicing palliative care APRNs, and graduate-prepared advanced practice nurses interested in palliative care, but who work in nonclinical settings such as research, academia, and administration. The book serves as a much needed resource for a broad audience of advanced practice nurses. The editors, as well as many of the authors, are national and international experts in the field of palliative care.
Features: The book promotes skills and competencies as a foundation for advanced practice palliative nursing practice. It covers a multitude of topics, including common symptoms in serious illness, pediatric palliative care, spiritual and existential issues, issues around role and function, reimbursement, and leadership. Useful case studies are included in each chapter. The book is well-written, and the topics are all important, making it difficult to identify any one outstanding chapter. Each chapter is essentially self-contained, making it easy to use as a reference.
Assessment: This is a long overdue and much needed book. The editors and authors have done an outstanding job identifying past, present, and future contributions of advanced practice nurses in palliative care. In addition to covering topics such as history and role, the book is an excellent reference for addressing the role of the advanced practice palliative care nurse as it relates to the National Consensus Project for Quality Palliative Care - Clinical Practice Guidelines. This is a must-have for all advanced practice nurses addressing palliative care issues, regardless of their practice setting.
