Description: This book reviews several fundamental fields of study germane to the overall discipline of pharmaceutics. It begins with reviews of thermodynamics and ionic equilibria. The following chapter discusses properties of solutions including solubility and dissolution. Surface chemistry as it applies to colloids and coarse dispersions including emulsions and suspensions is presented. The second half of the book presents the general concepts of kinetics and drug stability, diffusion, controlled release and finally polymer science as it relates to many of the excipients utilized in dosage form formulation.
Purpose: The author expresses the desire that the book become a text for graduate level courses in pharmaceutics. It is intended for a two semester course with some supplementation for complete coverage. Although there are several useful books that can be used in graduate courses, including Martin's Physical Pharmacy: Physical Chemical Principles in the Pharmaceutical Sciences, 4th Edition (Lea & Febiger, 1993), and Florence and Atwood's Physicochemical Principles of Pharmacy, 3rd Edition (Pharmaceutical Press, 1998), both of these also target the undergraduate or professional pharmacy curriculum. A comprehensive book covering the general areas taught in many graduate pharmaceutics courses would be welcomed by many instructors. In a general sense, this book meets those objectives. Based on personal preferences, the extent of coverage of each topic may not be ideal. However, each topic covered is valuable and the references provide additional sources for further study.
Audience: According to the author, the book is directed primarily at graduate students and pharmaceutical scientists involved in drug product development. It provides good fundamental coverage of many topics of interest to pharmaceutical scientists engaged in research in the area of pharmaceutics. Thus it will be a valuable text as well as reference book for many pharmaceutical scientists. Although the author may not be extremely well known in the area, this book will undoubtedly bring him greater visibility.
Features: The book addresses a number of areas that are typically included in graduate level courses in pharmaceutics. It provides a relatively comprehensive review of areas that are important in pharmaceutics and would be a reasonable choice as a text for graduate level courses. I particularly liked the final chapter on polymers and their use in drug formulation. Membrane diffusion and drug release from controlled release devices are also covered more extensively than in comparable books. I found the problems at the end of most chapters to be a valuable addition. However, in the first couple of chapters, the problems could have used more pharmaceutically relevant examples. Generally the book is well written and carefully prepared, but a few typos did sneak through. For example, on page 114 just above example 3.1, it is stated that equation 3.6 is valid when T>Tm when it is actually valid when T<Tm. I would like to have seen somewhat expanded coverage of factors that influence solubility and approaches that can be taken to enhance solubility. I also would have liked a description of the potential problems of diluting solutions where cosolvent systems are used for solubilization.
Assessment: This is a relatively comprehensive text reviewing many aspects of physical pharmacy as applied in drug product formulation. It is well written and a reasonable alternative to other available books that are not specifically intended for graduate level courses. The chapter on the use of polymers in dosage forms is somewhat unique in this type of a textbook. Many instructors of graduate courses in pharmaceutics will find this a good text for teaching many fundamental principles.
