About the Author

Dr. Eric Storch is McIngvale Presidential Endowed Chair & Professor at Baylor College of Medicine. Dr. Storch has received multiple grants from federal agencies for his research (i.e., NIH, CDC), is a Fulbright Scholar, and has published over 14 books and over 500 articles and chapters. He specializes in the nature and treatment of childhood and adult obsessive-compulsive disorder and related conditions, anxiety disorders, and anxiety among youth with autism.

Dr. Abramowitz is Associate Professor of Psychology and Director of the Anxiety Disorders Clinic at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He is an internationally recognized expert on the treatment of OCD and has published over 100 journal articles, books chapters, or books on this and related topics. He has received awards from the Mayo Clinic, American Psychological Association (Division 12) and the Obsessive-Compulsive Foundation. Dr. Abramowitz serves as Associate Editor of Behavior Research and Therapy and on the editorial boards of several professional journals. He was a members of the DSM-IV-TR Anxiety Disorders Work Group.

Description: This book explores theory, characteristics, and treatment options for fairly unusual presentations of obsessive-compulsive disorders, with a case illustration for each disorder.
Purpose: According to the book, "into this void, this volume arrives to provide summaries of the extant research and case illustrations of treatment for a variety of presentations of OCD that are likely to present for treatment" (p. xiii). Those are worthy objectives. The book meets the stated objectives.
Audience: According to the book, "the target audience for this volume are any mental health workers routinely treating individuals with OCD or any of the associated conditions described in this book" (p. xiii). I agree with the target audience described above. The book meets the needs of its intended audience. The authors are credible authorities in the subject matter of the book. However, not much is written about their credentials except for institutional affiliations. Eric A. Storch is a professor at Baylor College of Medicine. Dean McKay is a professor at Fordham University. Jon Abramowitz is a professor at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The other contributors represent an international authorship from the United States and United Kingdom. They are affiliated with well-known institutions of higher learning.
Features: The book begins with the relationship between misophonia and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). Exposure and response prevention (ERP) treatment has been used successfully in these cases. Orthorexia nervosa is a preoccupation with the nutritional quality of food, leading to restrictive eating. Physicians are needed as part of the multidisciplinary team in order to avoid refeeding syndrome. When evaluating patients presenting with OCD, clinicians should be aware of distressing sensory phenomena. Some individuals with OCD experience "incompleteness," with symptoms of neutralizing, checking, and hoarding. A clinical symptom seen commonly is scrupulosity, where a person feels they have sinned against God and then engage in rituals to atone for that sin. Treatment from a CBT perspective includes psychoeducation, situational exposure, and response prevention. Patients may attempt to self-medicate (substance abuse) in order to avoid symptoms (stress dampening). In these cases, substance use treatment is added to the other strategies. There are cases where both OCD and PTSD are present, which have been treated with mixed results. Postpartum obsessive-compulsive disorder has a prevalence rate of 2.4%. The obsessions are focused on the baby. Psychotropic medication is often combined with psychosocial treatment strategies. The book ends with a discussion of OCD and autism spectrum disorder. Modifications to CBT are often needed due to language and communication difficulties. The book is very readable and contains figures/tables, which help clarify the text. There are no obvious shortcomings of the book.
