Description: This book is a compilation of training materials utilized by the authors for educating adult acute care nurse practitioners. The title references their case-based approach to education demonstrating best practices in patient care. This is a first edition.
Purpose: The purpose of the book is to serve as an adjunct to the individual's learning experience. As described in the title, the authors use a case-based approach teaching method. This book is an additional resource in the educational toolbox. It provides the learner with potential real-life case studies to stimulate critical thinking skills. The online format is a direct mirror of the published book.
Audience: This book is written for students, current clinicians, and educators. The target audience is acute care nurse practitioners, but may also be useful in additional healthcare settings. The book meets the needs of the intended audience. The authors have similar and additional credentials to other contributors to the book.
Features: The flow of the book is easy to follow with each chapter including case studies, clinical pearls, key points, multiple tables, figures, and boxes with important bullet points and occasional mnemonics to aide in the learning process. The chapters end with a series of questions pertinent to the information discussed. References are provided at the end of each chapter. The case studies are thought provoking with learning enhanced by the key points, tables, figures, and boxes. The tools and pictures are colorful to aid the visual learner. The title appropriately addresses the information reflected in the publication.
Assessment: As a seasoned RN, I found the book well written and an easy resource to read and follow. I enjoyed reading a number of case studies using my personal experience in critical care to answer the questions at the end of the chapters. The clinical pearls and key points provide food for thought. The overall content is thought provoking, forcing one to develop and utilize critical thinking skills.
