Overview

Adrift in New York tells the tale of Florence Linden, her cousin, Curtis Waring, and a young man known only as "Dodger." Florence is to inherit a fortune from her dying uncle, John Linden, but only if she marries Curtis. The will also includes Linden's lost son, if he still lives. Rather than marry Curtis, Florence leaves her uncle's house, intent on making it on her own. Of course, she meets with many challenges and faces many dangers along the way before the book ends. Florence occupies a primary role the story. Alger very seldom featured a female.

About the Author

Horatio Alger, Jr. (January 13, 1832 – July 18, 1899) was a prolific 19th-century American author, best known for his many formulaic juvenile novels about impoverished boys and their rise from humble backgrounds to lives of middle-class security and comfort through hard work, determination, courage, and honesty. His writings were characterized by the "rags-to-riches" narrative, which had a formative effect on America during the Gilded Age.
