Purpose: It provides an alphabetical listing of problems with definitions, brief commentary, and core references.
Audience: Medical students and junior trainees are an appropriate audience for this work.
Features: The book's 400-plus pages contain definitions and brief commentary on hundreds of problems, drugs, and symptoms encountered in acute medicine. Ample cross-referencing is used to avoid repetition. In some cases, a term is defined by a simple list of related items followed by a small number of references. Other terms may be followed by several paragraphs of text followed by references. References represent summary papers from original literature. While citations can be as recent as the year prior to publication, many classic papers more than a decade old are also used. There are no technical illustrations, but shading identifies key observations.
Assessment: This is a handy reference and dictionary for junior practitioners needing quick insight into an unfamiliar problem. While it is more than a simple dictionary, as the editor notes, it is clearly not a substitute for a standard textbook. As it crosses many disciplines, this book can serve students on many services confronted with problems in acute medicine.
