This book is a compilation of currently available information on Acinetobacter spp., including the microbiology, epidemiology, and infections. An important focus of the book is the antimicrobial resistance demonstrated by this organism, its acquisition of resistance, and the therapeutic problems associated with resistance. The purpose is to present the microbiology, epidemiology, infections, resistance to antibiotics, and therapeutic approaches to Acinetobacter. The book is appropriate for physicians practicing in infectious disease and intensive care and for clinical microbiologists. The book has a pleasant, easy-to-read style. There are numerous tables with compilations of data summarizing numerous reports of Acinetobacter infections and graphs documenting increasing resistance of the organism over the years to numerous antibiotics. This book is an extremely useful compilation of clinically relevant facts regarding Acinetobacter spp. Highlighting the types of infections caused by Acinetobacter, the authors document the increasing importance of this nosocomial pathogen. The book serves as a resource for Acinetobacter antimicrobial resistance mechanisms and adequately discusses the therapeutic problems and alternatives associated with these resistance mechanisms.
