Overview

There is nothing more miraculous, natural, and beautiful than the birth of a child. From the moment a pregnancy is first confirmed, the event is filled with great hopes, dreams, and expectations by the prospective parents and their friends and families. In the majority of pregnancies, nature progresses without complications and results in a healthy outcome for both mother and baby. However, childbirth has never been a quick or easy process. During the years that I was an obstetrician, I always tried to let labor proceed as naturally as possible, but I was also immediately available to treat any complication that can occur prenatally or during labor and delivery. In this memoir, I have also described the rigorous and extensive training required to become a board-certified obstetrician, and I share with you some of the most amazing and interesting experiences during my career.

About the Author

Dr. Douglas Wills is a board-certified obstetrician-gynecologist, father of four children, and grandfather of seven grandchildren. He learned compassion from his father (who was a family doctor) and his mother (who was a nurse) while growing up in the small town of Auburn, Indiana. He credits his parents for instilling in him the commitment to treat every patient with kindness, respect, and equality. During his fourth year of medical school at Indiana University School of Medicine, he experienced great joy assisting natural childbirths. Consequently, he chose obstetrics and gynecology as his specialty.
Dr. Wills earned his bachelor of science degree at Manchester University in Indiana, with a double major in biology and chemistry, and attended Indiana University School of Medicine for his doctorate in medicine. He then completed his four years of specialty training in obstetrics and gynecology at Indiana University Health Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis, Indiana.
During his career, Dr. Wills delivered several thousand babies. He developed and established treatment protocols for the neonatal resuscitation team at Community Hospital East in Indianapolis in conjunction with pediatrician Dr. Patricia Keener in 1981. He served as chairman of the OB-GYN Department at Community Hospital East in Indianapolis in 1986 and 1992 and was the senior partner of Clearvista Women’s Care in Indianapolis, Indiana, until his retirement in 2002.
Dr. Wills wrote his memoir in an attempt to reflect on the abundant miracles of the birth process and to describe the hypervigilance and expertise necessary to save both mothers and babies during life-threatening labor and delivery emergencies and illnesses. All four of his adult children are also healthcare professionals.
