The CIA uses the overseas programmes of Bransome Southern University as a cover for its operations in a number of countries in the Middle East, Russia, Japan and Eastern Europe. The unwitting instrument of these machinations is a young man, J.T., who is initially manipulated by his venal superiors, but after many adventures, defeats them. He manages to become romantically involved with attractive women in every country in which he sets foot. He is enmeshed in the killing and the extensive posthumous travels of an unpleasant colleague, who, transformed into a religious icon, eventually brings the whole edifice of the CIA's plot crashing to the ground.
