Editorial Reviews

DEC 05/JAN 06 - AudioFile

At first, Ruth Ann Phimister's slightly rough voice seems an unlikely choice for the story of Helen, a 9-year-old girl who must find a way to survive when she and her younger sister are captured by Comanches in Texas in the 1850s. But Phimister proves her suitability as she finds expression for each character, whether white child or tribal elder. Her reading conveys Helen's struggle to remain apart emotionally, as well as the tribe's growing affection for her and her strength of character, during the 14 years she lives with them. Phimister's ability to remain true to each character both in vocal style and emotional level compounds the power and impact of the narrative. This is a compelling production. M.A.M.
