Description: This is a laminated, illustrated guide to basic procedures performed by anesthesiologists.
Purpose: The authors set out to make a visually appealing book to help both new trainees in anesthesiology and medical students gain familiarity with a variety of procedures, and they have succeeded. The book predominantly uses mannequins for illustration; more depictions of live humans might have been more helpful.
Audience: Medical students and anesthesia trainees are the likely audience. Those with even slightly more experience on an anesthesia service are likely to find this book too basic. Medical students with whom I have shared this book have found it to be a wonderful introduction to procedures they will be seeing or performing on their anesthesia rotation.
Features: The book illustrates IV and arterial access (peripheral and central), ventilation (mask and supraglottic), several types of tracheal intubation, and spinal/epidural anesthesia. The graphics are excellent, but the descriptions are somewhat repetitive. The laminated pages feel very strong — sturdy enough to last in the operating room and through several washings. A video complement to this book could add significantly to its value.
Assessment: This is an excellent beginner's reference, with a neat and easy to follow format.
