Overview

Winter has set in, but young Eddie Bolton will never see another snowfall in Duluth, Minnesota. Someone has killed him in what should have been a secure juvenile detox ward at the Benton Dowling Center. Police Officer Leona "Leo" Reese is working temporarily as a state investigator of fraud and licensing infractions, but has been out of commission due to surgery. On her first week back on the job, she is faced with the aftermath of the 17-year-old's death.

Working with the local police, Leo discovers precious little evidence and far too few people with motives for the killing. As she uncovers long-buried secrets, someone else is murdered, and Leo realizes that she, too, is in danger. In the midst of her own emotional turmoil, is Leo strong enough and smart enough to confront and catch a clever and ruthless murderer?

About the Author

Lori L. Lake is the author of over a dozen novels and two short story collections. She’s edited four anthologies, including Lesbians on the Loose with Jessie Chandler, which won a Golden Crown Literary “Goldie” Award. Her crime short stories are featured in over a dozen anthologies including The Silence of the Loons, Time’s Rainbow, Once Upon a Crime, and Women of the Mean Streets.

Lori facilitates the Portland Lesbian Writers Group and is known for sharing writing craft resources. She is especially fond of teaching about crime fiction, short stories, and the craft of creating novels. In her spare time, she runs a small publishing house called Launch Point Press and administers the Alice B. Reader Appreciation Awards.

Right at the edge of Portland, Oregon, Lori lives in the Fortress of Solitude/Sanctuary of Solace where she spends time reading, writing, editing, playing guitar, adoring pop and oldies music, painting and coloring, photographing nature, and enjoying the exploits of her multitude of nieces and nephews. Lake's newest series is a puzzler from the get-go with all the elements of a great mystery: plenty of intrigue, lots of suspense, and a fantastic setting (Duluth, Minnesota). With Leo's vision issues and the implosion of her relationship, Lake continues to stir the pot—providing a recipe for another winner.

When it comes to plotting, Lake subscribes to the "one darn thing after another" school—something I like in a mystery. The protagonist, Leo (Leona) Reese leaped all the hurdles Lake set for her, along the way acquiring a terrific sidekick (I hope he's back in the next book) and dealing with co-workers who made me glad, once again, that I'm retired.
