Examining the impact of ecotourism on Belizean society, Duffy (politics and international relations, Lancaster U., UK) argues that ecotourism is not the unmitigated good it is touted to be and should be regarded as a part of the global capitalist system rather than any kind of challenge to it. She looks at the environmental attitudes of ecotourists and the way ecotourism intersects with globalization. She suggests that ecotourists are less concerned about their environmental and political impact than with individual development and that ecotourism is a part of larger political and economic system that frustrates genuine development for indigenous communities.
