Overview

At thirty, Jim Wiggins was just finishing college, still dating his high school sweetheart, and content with his life. That is, until the unexpected arrival of an old torn photograph and a French reporter's journal sends him off on a daunting adventure. Presented with a ticket to China along with the old journal and torn picture, he is reluctantly tasked with discovering the fate of his distant cousin, a Catholic priest. Father Kevin, a missionary in China, vanished fifty years earlier, shortly after the new communist government came to power.
Once in China, filled with trepidation and tormented by visions of worst-case scenarios, Jim pursues his quest. He teams up with an American businessman, a seminarian, and the beautiful but mysterious Lui Ling. Moving between present day dangers and intrigues of the past, he translates the French journal in hopes of gaining clues to his cousin's fate. Jim struggles to find the resolve he needs but as the trail seems to go cold and they've appeared to have drawn unwanted attention he finds what he wasn't expecting—spiritual truth and direction in his life.

About the Author

James O'Leary had a deep and lasting love for the Chinese people and a heart for missions. It was this passion that prompted him to travel to China in 2002 at the age of seventy-three in order to fulfill his lifelong dream of working with the underground Catholic Church. His time in China proved helpful in the creation of A Torn Picture, however, the storyline itself had been nurtured over many decades.
James, a native of Colorado, spent his early career in civil service, providing for his wife, Dorothea, and their eight children. Despite the demands of family and career, his creative mind was never at rest. He entertained his eager audience of eight with adventurous and suspenseful “Friday night stories.” After retiring from government service, he moved to Arkansas where he and Dorothea founded Ol Shalom Ranch. Ol Shalom provided a pastoral setting where Christians could find spiritual refreshment and quiet time with the Lord. He also pursued his love of writing, returning to college to earn his bachelor of fine arts in creative writing and a master of liberal arts.
The first edition of this novel was published shortly before his death in 2013. It was his desire that his children edit and republish A Torn Picture. This edition is the fulfillment of his wish.
