A Revolution in Singing
Sing from the diaphragm! Project your voice into your mask! Sing into your head cavity! Sing out of your forehead! WHAT?? After centuries of artful singing, voice teachers continue to teach these—and other—misguided techniques? And to make this situation even more ridiculous, not only has science shown these practices to have NO basis in reality, trying to learn them actually inhibits and even erodes vocal ability. This nonsense must end!
The purpose of A Revolution In Singing is:
-to expose the misguided concepts and practices that are destroying the voices of dedicated singing students and professionals alike;
-to highlight influential figures and moments in the history of the singing art form in Western culture;
-to explain the meaning and purpose of a vocal technique;
-to spell-out the requirements, goals, and ideals of artistic singing;
-to give a survey of the origins and development of my voice-building system;and finally,
to show methodically how to build your singing voice.
The world of singing instruction is cluttered with so many ludicrous ideas that a significant degree of house cleaning is necessary. As the book unfolds, I will expose these baffling concepts and replace them with accurate and understandable information.
Part 2 of A Revolution In Singing is my voice-building system in written form; this section does not presuppose prior knowledge of singing or even reading earlier sections of this book. If you choose, you could go directly to Part 2 and begin to build your voice. Still, you would be wise to read the entire book; the numerous topics that I cover will increase your appreciation of the art form, enhance your understanding of the voice-building process, and ultimately, make building your voice that much more enjoyable—and effective.
Since you will frequently bump into important terms, concepts, and phrases—some of which are newly coined—a comprehensive glossary has been included. Please refer to it liberally. A Revolution Is Singing is the fruit of many years of study, research, experimentation, and teaching. The principles and regimens laid out have been tested countless times and lead me to make this iron-clad guarantee: follow my instructions faithfully and your voice and singing ability will improve dramatically; and you will come to know, first-hand, what all students of voice-building have discovered—that “behind the great voice is the muscular voice.”
