Edward VIII (Edward Albert Christian George Andrew Patrick David; June 23, 1894 - May 28, 1972), later known as the Duke of Windsor, was King of the United Kingdom and the Dominions of the British Empire and Emperor of India, and titular head of the Church of England from January 20, 1936 until his abdication in December of the same year, a result of intending to, and eventually, marrying American socialite and divorcée Wallis Simpson.
