Overview

A story of Jimmy Steele's brutal murder by Bryce Todd Brosier. His willingness to take responsibility and be accountable for his actions, his remorse, compassion, and empathy for Peggy Steele, Jimmy's mother, and Beth Stephenson, Jimmy's cousin, has allowed for Peggy's forgiveness, grace, and healing and Beth's healing. This was accomplished after they met face-to-face in the prison where Bryce is incarcerated for a restorative-justice high-risk victim-offender dialogue. Peggy was able to ask the very difficult questions surrounding Jimmy's death. Did he struggle? Did he suffer? Did he say anything? If so, what were his last words? Bryce's willingness to answer Peggy's questions in detail has allowed her the peace she needs to accept the truth and no longer imagine many different scenarios surrounding her son's murder. This is the story of how restorative justice has changed the lives of Bryce, Peggy, and Beth and the journey they continue to pursue spreading the values of restorative justice in their lives.

About the Author

Peggy Steele is the mother of Jimmy Steele, who was murdered in 1995. While working on her master’s program at Regis University in 2001, she became involved with restorative justice. She has continued to work in restorative justice, seeking answers for why her son was murdered. Only Todd could provide the answers. Then in February 2014, Bryce, Beth, and Peggy joined together for a high-risk victim-offender dialogue, and Peggy received her long-awaited answers.

Bryce Todd Brosier has been in prison since 1995 and is presently incarcerated at Four Mile Correctional Center. He has embraced the concept of restorative justice following the high-risk victim-offender dialogue with Beth and Peggy. He is now fifty years old, has less hair, wears glasses, and speaks with a softer and more compassionate voice. His heart can now be seen, heard, and felt. He is no longer the menacing young man who murdered Jimmy Steele.

Beth Stephenson is the cousin of Jimmy Steele. The two were more than just family; they were friends. Jimmy and Beth shared so many life moments while growing up and graduating high school together. Beth went on and pursued a fifteen-year career in community corrections where she works daily with offenders like Bryce, reintegrating them back into the community and helping them deal with the consequences of their past in order to navigate a future. Beth’s unique career choice has helped her see the human aspects of offenders and not just see their crimes. Beth has witnessed the change that people can make, and it started with Bryce.
