A Moment in Time
A Moment in Time
by Ross Drinkwater
This is a true story of my journey into China back in 1981, before its doors opened to the western world. My travels to this vast and ancient land provided me with an appreciation and understanding of a culture which, at that time, I knew little about. My knowledge to this point was limited to Mao Zedong, his Cultural Revolution, the Little Red Book, and the fact that there were a billion people living there.

My personal experience of this describes the incredible journey and sequence of events thereafter. I marvel at the phenomenal change, the way in which old China disappeared and a new nation emerged. It discusses the speed of economic reform together with the huge improvements in the standard of living, having greatly impressed me during my subsequent visits to China. My fascination, however, still remains with old China and its people—how they were.

Witnessing these changes, understanding the culture and its people and simply enjoying every moment has been extraordinary, a real eye-opener and an inspiration.
