This very accessible one-volume history of the British Isles, by an English professor of history, incorporates not simply English history but also that of Scotland, Ireland, and Wales, for, as the author correctly insists, "it is important to place due weight on [the British Isles'] separate and diverse national traditions." Prehistory to the present day is the extent of coverage; readers should expect no "long" discussions about any one particular topic. Black's treatment is as broad-ranging as it is cogent. Not just kings fall within Black's purview, but also commoners; not just politics, but economics and technology, too; and not simply interrelations among the component nationalities of the British Isles but also each of those nationalities' relations with the rest of Europe. A good acquisition for history collections needing a general history of the area.

Unlike most accounts of the British Isles which are really just histories of England, Black (history, U. of Exeter) examines the shared political, social, economic, and cultural history of the Scottish, Irish, English, and Welsh. He focuses on the political relations among the constituent parts of Britain, on relations between those parts and the rest of the Europe, and on the various stages since pre-history through with the British Isles have passed to achieve their present identity.
