Joan was blind at birth, only able to see light and shade and bright colours and absolute contrasts. She has an amazing and awesome memory, remembering events that should not have been possible to recall.

The stories are thought-provoking, heart-warming and sometimes tear-jerking but are written with a wonder of life and a fascination and willingness to keep learning all about the world she lived in. Joan's childhood was happy and she taught herself to get by in some of the toughest times of the 20th century, at the end of, and just after the Second World War.
