Overview

Undertaker Drew Slocombe is not having a good day. His business is failing, the car needs an MOT and he's driven 120 miles to the Cotswolds to carry out the late Greta Simmond's final wishes. Unfortunately, when he gets there, a string of bureaucratic mistakes means that he's now the chief suspect of a murder inquiry. Thea Osborne and her loyal spaniel Hepzie are house-sitting at Greta Simmonds' house, which is currently between ownership. Then the discovery of a body in a nearby field finds her embroiled in a murder investigation once again.

About the Author

REBECCA TOPE is the author of fifteen previous crime novels. She lives on a smallholding in Herefordshire, with a full complement of livestock, but manages to travel the world and enjoy civilization from time to time as well. Most of her varied experiences and activities find their way into her books, sooner or later; for example, bee keeping, milk recording, spinning, arguing, undertaking and gardening. She is also currently the membership secretary of the Crime Writers’ Association.

Rebecca Tope writes cosy mysteries set in the gentle hills of England’s Cotswolds. Thea Osborne, a sort of younger Miss Marple, is a middle-aged widow who house-sits in fine old Cotswold cottages and solves murders. In this particular mystery, the story’s point of view is not that of the amateur detective but that of an undertaker who performs natural burials, Drew Slocombe. The production is narrated by Caroline Lennon in a charmingly clear, expressive voice. But the voice of a female narrator is confusing to the listener, who keeps imagining a female companion to the engaging sleuth. Lennon’s voice is cultured and smooth, but she doesn’t differentiate one character from another, which can be further disorienting.
