INTRODUCTION

When I wished to sing of love, it turned to sorrow. And when I wished to sing of sorrow, it was transformed for me into love.

— Franz Schubert

A First Book of Schubert continues the popular Dover series of bringing the masterpieces of music to a wider audience. Franz Peter Schubert (1797–1828) began his career in the late Classical period and solidified his role as a Romantic composer. He is best remembered for composing more than 600 songs, as well as advancing chamber music and waltzes into an art form. Schubert died tragically young, but left behind a vast catalog of music that still inspires to this day.

The works presented in this collection have been carefully selected to be representative of the composer's style and arranged to be accessible. Fingerings have been provided as suggestions and should be tailored to each individual pair of hands. Phrasing and pedaling have also been kept to a minimum and should be filled in as technical progress is made. The unique melodic and technical insight found in Schubert's music is an invaluable tool for developing a beginner pianist's fingers, ears, and eyes.
