Overview

A Child's Way to Water Play presents to parents everywhere a safe, enjoyable, common sense approach to water play for their infants and preschool. Dr. Shank details how parents should introduce their children to water at an early age and in a warm and friendly environment so that their children will develop an emotional readiness for future swimming experiences.  It is this emotional readiness, coupled with physical readiness, that helps assure success in learning to swim. Photos and illustrations throughout contribute to visual appeal and understanding.
Part I covers water play and precaution including information on water fear, health, and safety. Ways to make water play convenient, fun, and practical are discussed.
Part II presents specific safety elements, fear issues, and play activities for five different water environments. The environments include sink, bath, shower, back yard, pool, ocean, and lake.

About the Author

Dr. Carolyn Shank is a mother, grandmother and lifetime educator. She taught swimming to people of all ages and paid close attention to those who were fearful of the water. She raised her two daughters based on a water play and noticed her children never developed a fear. With this in mind, her doctoral dissertation focused on water orientation, primarily fear of the water and health and safety issues. Dr. Shank turned this dissertation into a manuscript for publication in 1982. A Child's Way to Water Play led to an invitation to to consult with and run workshops for water safety organizations on infant and preschool aquatics in Australia and New Zealand. She was also invited to serve on the American Red Cross team that developed the infant/preschool aquatic certification program for swim instructors. Over time, the book went out of print, she retired from teaching at Cal Poly - San Luis Obispo and couples were still having babies with little information available on the topic of a common sense approach to water orientation. Dr. Shank decided to update the book and make it available for all new parents, care givers, early childhood educators, and swim instructors.
