Or you teetotal accountant, philatelist, adore her spaniel, loyal to the authorities, disciplined family man - and then in your hands gets a magazine article, which implies that you are at war, unmarried, half a bottle of scotch every night, the current political structure of your disgusting, you have a cat, and you are a doctor of biological sciences. Something similar happens with the characters of the novel. Having buried friend, who was killed in a car crash, they find his laptop password protected and archived files - documents, photos and videos. And these files are decidedly contrary to reality. Then friends are taking the investigation and its outcome not a stone was left of their world view.
