In 2014, the Statistical Office of the Republic of Slovenia (SURS) celebrated the 70th anniversary of its establishment. In these decades it evolved into an impartial and trustworthy institution with implemented quality standards. To mark this jubilee, a special publication was issued with the description of the most important milestones and achievements in the last decade. This publication is a continuation of the publication issued at the 60th anniversary of Slovene statistics.
Our working material is data, so we adjusted the description of SURS’s operation and development in the past decade to the principal parts of the lifecycle of a statistical survey – from planning a survey via data collection and processing to dissemination of results. With approximately 250 statistical surveys, we provide to all users quality, timely, temporally, spatially and internationally comparable data on the situation and trends in the economic, demographic and social fields, as well as in the field of environment and natural resources. SURS releases many publications with statistical results; however, our website is our most important communication channel. The contents of detailed data on our SI-STAT Data Portal have been expanding since 2005. Since 2009, SURS has been offering to its website users more and more interactive contents with various tools for spatial presentation of data.
The fundamental principles of our operation are neutrality, objectivity, professional independence, rationality, statistical confidentiality and transparency. The legal bases for SURS’s operation are the National Statistics Act, and medium-term and annual programmes of statistical surveys issued on the basis of the National Statistics Act. SURS made the commitment to the principles of the European Statistics Code of Practice.
SURS is an internationally active institution; it is a part of the European Statistical System (ESS) and is operating in the working groups and committees of Eurostat - the Statistical Office of the European Union.
This jubilee is for us the start of a new decade of work: on solid foundations SURS will be able to develop further and follow the motto that we can be even better.
