Read an Excerpt

This book explores hikes in and around Baltimore that will give those who want to hike a way to ease into the myriad of options we have available in our area. You’ll discover hiking trails that you may have driven right past and never knew existed. You’ll find that you can get outside and enjoy a beautiful day without having to trek hours into the mountains. Most importantly, you’ll have a wealth of options from which to choose. Do you want an easy walk along the water, a dog-friendly trek, an exhausting climb in the woods, or one that can include the whole family? We’ve got you covered.

This third edition contains substantial updates to the hikes that originally appeared in the second edition. Over the past several years, there have been many route changes in the area, including the completion of the Jones Falls Trail, removal of the Bloede’s Dam from the Patapsco Valley State Park, and other projects that have rerouted and improved some of the trails. I’ve removed several of the more overgrown trails that had become difficult to navigate in favor of some additional family-friendly options. Where available, I’ve taken efforts to include information on trails or activities that are accessible, for those in wheelchairs or with strollers.
