Description: This is a drug reference guide that lists everything about a medication that healthcare providers need access to, including adverse effects, mechanism of action, drug class, interactions, and nursing considerations. Published every year to include updates related to medications, the book becomes bigger due to new drugs being released to the market.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide a reference for nurses and student nurses. It discusses the nurse's responsibility in medication administration and emphasizes that nurses and student nurses need to know about the medications they are administering to patients. It is intended to save time in locating information about medications.
Audience: Although this book is primarily for nurses and nursing students, other providers also can use it because it includes the usual dosages. Additionally, since all providers attempt to educate their patients on medications they are taking, this book can be useful because it includes patient teaching sections on each medication. The reviewers and clinical consultants are credible.
Features: The book covers the current medications nurses are likely to administer to a patient including topical, oral, and IV medications. It provides all the information needed to safely administer including dosages, interactions, mechanism of action, drug class, adverse effects, and patient information. Medications are listed alphabetically and referenced in the back of the book. What differentiates this book from other drug references are the nursing considerations and patient teaching points. A separate chapter covers ophthalmic, antiviral, and chemotherapeutic medications. The only negative is the size/weight of the book - it's now a little big to be called a handbook.
Assessment: Most nursing students are required to purchase a drug handbook. As a reference, this one is excellent and it also serves the purpose of a textbook. Student nurses rely heavily on a drug handbook for learning about medications. Additionally, every nurse's station in a hospital or clinic setting has a medication reference. There are some similarities to other handbooks that are intended for prescription writers (MDs, PAs, APRNs), but this nurse's handbook spells out what education the patient should get. There are so many drug handbooks that students don't know which one to purchase. Davis's Drug Guide for Nurses, 15th edition, Vallerand (F. A. Davis Company, 2016) is probably the most popular, but all are similar and contain the same information. My question is, do we really need another drug handbook?
