Description: These drug cards are a concise study guide for any healthcare professional who needs to learn the most important facts about the most frequently prescribed drugs. The cards include the most pertinent facts about each drug, a picture of the generic or brand product, key patient counseling points, and clinical pearls. In addition, there is an online reference for drug interactions on some of the drugs.
Purpose: The cards are intended to serve as a clear and concise reference for the most commonly prescribed medications.
Audience: They can serve as a study guide for any healthcare professional, but are targeted at, and would be most helpful to, pharmacy students studying for the NAPLEX exam. Dr. Vermeulen is a respected pharmacy practitioner, educator, and expert in drug information.
Features: Each card lists the generic and brand name of each drug, the class, available dosage forms, FDA-labeled and unlabeled indications, and a concise monograph. The mechanism of action and the most relevant pharmacokinetic information are also included. Important safety facts that are included are dialyzability, pregnancy/lactation information, pharmacogenomic data, drug interactions, and adverse effects. The adverse effects are divided by common, less common and rare but serious, which will be helpful for students. The key counseling points/clinical pearls emphasize the most important points about each drug. For drugs that have multiple drug interactions, the card refers to an online reference that I was unable to access (the code was missing from the book). The appendix, which refers the user to another online reference, includes a card that contains examples of the most common CYP450 inhibitors, inducers, and substrates, but does not include p-glycoprotein interactions. The appendix cards are brief and not very helpful. Overall, the font size on all the cards is too small and difficult to read especially in those cases that there is an extensive amount of information. The photograph colors are not accurate (e.g. the SMZ-TMP tablet color on the card is gray, but it is really white) and could mislead students.
Assessment: These cards will serve as a useful study guide for students. Although there are comparable books available in terms of content and organization (Frequently Prescribed Medications: Drugs You Need to Know, Mancano and Gallagher (Jones & Bartlett Learning, 2012)), students often find study cards/ iPhone/iPad apps more user friendly.
