About the Author

Jennifer Brody is the award-winning author of The 13th Continuum. Her debut novel sold in a 3-book deal and is being packaged into a television show. Her book is a Gold Medal Winner from the Independent Publisher's Moonbeam Children's Book Awards. Return of the Continuums and The United Continuums complete her epic trilogy. Translation rights have sold in multiple territories, most notably Russia and China. She lives and writes in LA, where she's hard at work on her next book.


Jules Rivera is a Latinx artist who has worked as an illustrator, colorist, animator, and writer, prompting SyFy Wire to call her "a multi-talented force in indie comics." She is the creator of a weekly autobiographical cartoon strip, Love, Joolz, and feminist sci-fi epic, Valkyrie Squadron, which are both being packaged into graphic novels. Additionally, she worked on the graphic novels Barbie Starlight Adventure and Barbie Video Game Hero for Mattel. She also creates sci-fi designs for TV and film and teaches storyboarding at the college level. She lives and works in LA when she's not surfing on the weekends.

Brody and Rivera (Spectre Deep 6) retread a tired sci-fi concept in this sparse graphic novel. In a not-too-distant future, death by natural causes has been eliminated and all citizens live exactly 200 years—unless they can pass a test to prove themselves worthy of joining the elite 1% of “Millennials” in permanent immortality. On her 200th birthday, Eva Thorne, whose husband Owen has already passed his 200th birthday and been euthanized, tries to escape her fate, only to stumble upon dark secrets behind the Millenials program. Though the characters’ development flirts with a few promising moments in flashback, like Eva’s roller-skating meet-cute with her husband, these tend to fizzle out. The Logan’s Run–like premise and overly familiar plot twists eventually dissolve into a confusing finale. Artist Rivera, who has recently breathed new life into the Mark Trail comic strip, here lacks the technical chops to bring a futuristic society to life. Though she impresses with imaginative, hexagon-based page compositions and makes clever use of spot color, the stripped-down art and awkward figures falter. There’s just not enough new in this venture to recommend it to genre fans. (Feb.)

This vibrant, bubbly graphic novel is set in a drudgingly mundane future with an absurd social contract. The setup: a world, about 200 years from now, in which everyone has two centuries to live before their expiration date and unceremonious execution—unless they're able to pass a test, shrouded in mystery, that will gift them eternal life. The story opens with Eva Thorne preparing sourly for her own bicentennial and recalling a long, long romantic past with her newly absent partner. As it turns out, her test involves an examination of their relationship, with time travel, tough choices, tenderness, and a smattering of romance novel—level intimacy. Brody's ("The Continuum Trilogy") snappy, straightforward storytelling, coupled with Rivera's noir angles and delightfully improbable future-scapes, is imperfect—even a bit of an amateur imitation of classic sci-fi—but the book manages to be both tongue-in-cheek and entirely compelling. The rollicking, confident execution (no pun intended) of this comic adventure makes it a true page-turner, and luckily a second volume seems to be in the works. VERDICT A promising, playful sci-fi noir, this title isn't perfect or particularly original, but it buzzes with neon energy that leaves readers eager for more.
