Description: This book provides about a two-paragraph synopsis of landmark trials and studies over the last several decades.
Purpose: The aim is to provide historical context for information that is currently either assumed to be true or is common practice. The book is not an essential title in an internal medicine collection, but it does allow a critical evaluation of long-standing practice patterns.
Audience: The book is written for a range of practice levels, from student to practitioner, and is understandable at all levels. The greatest benefit would likely accrue to younger providers who were not in practice when the majority of these trials were published. The authors are all physicians working with 2 Minute Medicine, which was founded with the goal of providing concise summaries of important publications.
Features: Each trial's summary, which can be read in a few minutes, presents a synopsis of the patient population, inclusion and exclusion criteria, major results, shortcomings, and implications for practice. This is the only book I have come across that aims to collect a group of older trials that serve as the basis for common practices. The unique feature is the format in which the trials are presented. The shortcoming is that it does not provide any new information, although this is not its aim. However, it can occasionally feel like a collector's item.
Assessment: This is a creative idea and an ambitious goal — to collect a small number of landmark trials drawn from decades of research. By definition, the book must be broad and superficial, which is not necessarily a bad thing. It meets its goal of providing concise summaries of these trials, and a historical context for how we practice today. It is not a particularly useful primary reference, but it does provide some interesting talking points and trivia to remind younger providers of the work that has preceded them.
