Overview

This is a compilation of literature documenting the history of contemporary Chinese philosophy, it records in detail the truth about the ideological emancipation movement and the political struggle to eliminate "spiritual pollution" that took place 40 years ago. In June 1983, a symposium on "Modern Natural Science and Marxist Epistemology" was held in Guilin, Guangxi. Graduate students of the Department of Philosophy at Fudan University released "Several Opinions on Epistemology", which put forward all-round criticism and challenges to the outdated philosophical research, like a thunderclap. In October of that year, after Deng Xiaoping announced the elimination of spiritual pollution, the Guilin Academic Symposium turned into a political event and became a serious case of "spiritual pollution." With the rapid ebb of the national movement, graduate students at Fudan University have continuously published articles, held a series of lectures on philosophy, and marched forward holding high the banner of academic freedom and independence.

这是一本中国当代哲学史的文献汇编书, 详实地记录了四十年前发生的思想解放运动和清除"精神污染"斗争真相。1983年6月，"现代自然科学与马克思主义认识论"讨论会在广西桂林举行，复旦大学哲学系研究生发布了《关于认识论的几点意见》，对陈旧的哲学研究提出了全方位的批评挑战，如同一声惊雷。当年10月邓小平宣布清除精神污染，桂林学术会议演变为政治事件，成了"精神污染"的重案。随着全国运动急速退潮，复旦研究生连续发表文章，举办哲学系列讲座，高举学术自由独立精神大旗前进。

本书编著者周义澄, 哲学博士，原中国上海复旦大学副教授，曾任中国自然辩证法研究会理事，前苏联基辅大学、美国哥伦比亚大学访问学者；旅居海外后长期担任中文月刊编辑、记者，出版、发表过多部哲学、思维科学、社会政治、大众文化、人物访谈著作。

About the Author

Zhou Yicheng (Author and Editor): Graduated from the Journalism Department of Fudan University in 1968. In 1981, after obtained a master's degree in philosophy from the Philosophy Department of Fudan University, he then was hired to stay in the department as a lecturer, and associate professor. He received a Doctor of Philosophy degree in 1986.
He used to be a director of the Chinese Society for Dialectics of Nature, a visiting scholar at the University of Kiev in the former Soviet Union and Columbia University in New York, and an editor and freelance writer for the American Chinese Monthly magazine. His books include: "Scientific Creation and Intuition", published in 1986; "Natural Theory and the Modern Era", published in 1988; "Interview with Exiles", published in 2005; "Meditations on the History of Science", "Nature, Man and Mind", and "The Way Out of China's Political Reform", published in 2020 and 2023.

An Yanming (Foreword Writer): Graduated and obtained a master's degree in philosophy from the Philosophy Department of Fudan University in 1985. In 1997, he received a Ph.D in Asian languages and cultures from the University of Michigan.
He used to be an assistant researcher at the Institute of Philosophy of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, a lecturer of Chinese language and culture at the University of Michigan and Princeton University and is now a professor of Sinology and Philosophy at Clemson University. His books include: "The Idea of Cheng (Reality/Sincerity) in the History of Chinese Philosophy” published in 2005; he translated the book of "Construction of the Historical World in Spiritual Science" published in 2010; he was the editor -in-chief of “The New Life of Old Ideas: Chinese Philosophy in the Contemporary World, A Festschrift in Honor of Donald Munro” published in 2019.
