Overview

This recipe book is based around ingredients that would have been found in a 1900s kitchen store cupboard. The 1900s were an era when people relied on staple ingredients supplemented by seasonal produce. Baking was a weekly activity and ensuring that all food was used up without any waste was important.

The book contains recipes for whole cakes, small cakes, pastry cakes and biscuits. The selection includes several UK regional delicacies as well as more universal favourites such as the Victorian Sponge

About the Author

Rachel has a BA in History and an MA in Art History. She co-founded Penrose Antiques Ltd in 2010, which specialises in British antiques and decorative items for the home. Being an antiques dealer has given her a good understanding of how people lived in the past, how they furnished their homes and entertained their guests.

It was a natural step from laying out dinner services to researching the foods that would have been served and eaten in the past. Rachel has developed a strong interest in the history of food: the foods people ate, how they prepared food and how that food was served.
