Description: This is essentially a review of a basic microbiology course. Each unit has a number of questions to aid the student in preparing for a test.
Purpose: This book is intended as a supplement to the regular textbook and lecture notes, or for anyone who wants a review of microbiology. It doesn't cover all microbiological material but focuses on more difficult material that requires the most study to master. This book meets the author's objectives.
Audience: The target audience is microbiology or biology majors, health science majors, or anyone in a non-major introductory course. I concur except that I found the medical microbiology weak, which may leave health science majors a bit short of expectations.
Features: All the concepts taught in a beginning microbiology course are reviewed in a very brief manner. The review questions are good and the explanations of the answers are better. Links to the Web are incomplete (at the time of this review). Only the table of contents is listed; however, a scan of other Web links in the series is adequate. Two shortcomings are that only eight pages are devoted to pathogenic bacteria, and there is a lack of laboratory aspects.
Assessment: I view this as a "Cliff's Notes" for a beginning microbiology course. I found that the most important information is placed on the inside of the cover (Tips for Success, of which Tips for Studying is the most beneficial for the student). The questions and answers reinforce the most important material a student taking a beginning course should know and the authors explain the material in a manner that even a nonscience major could understand. I would hope that future editions contain more about specific bacteria.
