Be aware of the "I Quit Dip." Even dreams-come-true can seem like nightmares after you've lived them for a while. Suppose you finally landed a job with a company you've always wanted to work for. Or maybe you just got promoted and can now start working on the project you've coveted. Or maybe you have finally taken the leap into entrepreneurship and started your own business. At first, you're likely to feel very excited and optimistic. You can't wait to dive in and start doing all the things you've eagerly anticipated. People are congratulating you and encouraging you. You feel confident because, after all, these things wouldn't be happening if you weren't worthy of the additional responsibilities or authority.

Shortly after you've gotten into the new routine, however, the "I Quit Dip" sets in. The perks of the new position have faded, and now you're left with challenging work, hard questions (because you don't know the answers yet) and bigger demands than you've ever had. It feels like chaos, and you're not sure if you're on foot or horseback. The "I Quit Dip" hits you like a punch in the ribs, and it haunts you with a vengeance: "Why did I ever think I wanted to do this? What have I done? Maybe I'm in over my head." You know you've hit the bottom of the "I Quit Dip" when you're thinking, "Maybe I should get out of here."

Whenever you make a major change in your job (or any other aspect of your life), you're likely to find that, after a short time, your excitement and confidence will give way to disillusionment and uncertainty. This dip is a very predictable step in the process. However, you can rest assured that, after a brief period in the dip, you will recover. You'll find that the tasks and your emotions reach a normal state of equilibrium again. Your confidence returns and you start to think that this is going to be okay, after all. Recognize that the "I Quit Dip" is a temporary situation, and take heart. Many others have survived this, and you will too.

What People are Saying About This

Mary Mahoney

Mary Chris Mahoney from Queensbury, New York, April 4, 1999

***** Provocative guide to a fuller life; touches the heart. This little book is an easy read, organized by subjects and written in brief, single-page, thought-provoking essays. One can spend ten minutes on a section, walk away and ponder, and return whenever time allows without losing the thread of the book. It is almost a recipe book for life for those who have lived through the acquisition-is-all '80s and long for a more fulfilled, balanced life. It is highly appropriate for males or females, especially for those just starting adult life or those hitting the midlife "questioning" time. If you stop to think about it, most of what is in this book is something you once knew or could have figured out on your own, given enough time. But since Lemke and Diedrich have already done that and laid it succinctly before you, you have the option of moving forward, using their formulas or advice, and deciding whether it works for you. I liked the sections on keeping perspective, work, and family, but my favorite was the one on personal culture - a road map to help you know what kind of person you want to be, and how to get there. Despite its readability, this book isn't an easy-answer book. It asks some hard questions, and for those dedicated to finding that richer life, the work is just beginning!
