About the Author

Dr. Aaron Mohanty completed his medical schooling and neurosurgery residency in India and subsequently completed a fellowship at the University of Arizona Health Sciences Center and Phoenix Children’s Hospital, Phoenix, Arizona. He is currently an Assistant Professor of Neurosurgery at University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston, Galveston, Texas.

In simple terms, the purpose of this book can be summarized as it answers everything that you wanted to ask your doctor but forgot during the appointment."
Purpose: These worthy objectives are nicely met by this very basic book. Each chapter introduces a series of questions and then proceeds to answer them in a manner that families will understand. Over the course of the book, the author explains the various forms of hydrocephalus and the standard way in which most are currently treated.
Audience: The book is clearly for families and individuals who might be caregivers for individuals with hydrocephalus. It also would serve as a nice primer for medical students and other medical providers who need specific but not vast information on the subject. The author is a pediatric neurosurgeon in practice in Texas and allied with the medical school in Galveston.
Features: Chapters on brain anatomy, the types of hydrocephalus, and the patterns of recognition begin the book. The middle portion of the book, which runs to 21 chapters, defines each of the various types of hydrocephalus and explains treatment, including basic information on shunt types, insertion, and function. There is even a very interesting chapter on the use of shunts in pregnant women. The remaining chapters deal with complications, long term care, and results. The text is nicely supplemented with x-rays, photographs, and diagrams.
Assessment: Overall, this is a nice, reasonably-sized book on a single neurosurgical problem — hydrocephalus. For the majority of readers, it will very adequately cover the subject and provide almost more information than they ever wanted to know on this subject.
