Overview

Why aren't more schools seeing significant improvement in students' reading ability when they implement Response to Intervention (RTI) or Multitiered Systems of Support (MTSS) in their literacy programs? These frameworks serve as a way for educators to identify struggling readers and provide the small-group instruction they need to improve their skills. But the success stories are too few in number, and most schools have too little to show for their efforts. What accounts for the difference? What are successful schools doing that sets them apart?

Author and education consultant Susan Hall provides answers in the form of 10 success factors for implementing MTSS. Based on her experience in schools across the United States, she explains the "whys" and "hows" of

  • Grouping by skill deficit and using diagnostic assessments to get helpful data for grouping and regrouping.
  • Implementing an instructional delivery model, including the "walk-to-intervention" model.
  • Using intervention time wisely and being aware of what makes intervention effective.
  • Providing teachers with the materials they need for effective lessons and delivering differentiated professional development for administrators, reading coaches, teachers, and instructional assistants.
  • Monitoring progress regularly and conducting nonevaluative observations of intervention instruction.

Practical, comprehensive, and evidence-based, 10 Success Factors for Literacy Intervention provides the guidance educators need to move from disappointing results to solid gains in students' literacy achievement.

What People are Saying About This

Deb Fulton

10 Success Factors is the perfect title for this book. Too often, key factors in literacy intervention in a Multitiered System of Support (MTSS) have not been considered or implemented. With an easy, understandable style, Dr. Susan Hall clearly describes 10 factors that, if implemented, will increase the success of literacy intervention. Leaders, coaches, and teachers responsible for student growth in reading will find this a valuable resource for reflecting on their current practices, determining factors that may be missing, and implementing needed success factors to increase their students' reading outcomes.

Trey Duke

Dr. Hall has a proven track record of improving the interventions student receive, and with this book she has provided a substantial resource for any school or district not getting the most from their program. The examples, protocols, and templates she provides are doable and are sure to cause real change in how you serve your students. This truly is essential reading for anyone working to move their intervention program and their students to the next level.

Clare Gist

We have been implementing the 10 Success Factors for Literacy Intervention districtwide over the last three years in kindergarten through 3rd grade. We are very excited about the focus our teachers now have for reading intervention, the success they are beginning to see, and the reading skills our students are learning. As a result, our teachers have the opportunity for professional conversations through research-based common language that guides their ongoing decision making about the teaching of reading. This gives us hope that we can make a significant difference in the number of students reading on grade level by the end of 3rd grade.
