Overview

000000|FFFFFF Decoding is a photographic and poetic book that depicts the story of life across twenty-two countries with images captured over a span of twelve years. Decoding is not about perfect shots and polished prose but a reality check! Attempting to unlock the code of life with images and words, Lina beckons the very purpose of human existence. Has digital innovation progressed human development? Has the speed of the Age of Information expedited bringing more love to earthlings? With strong imagery accompanied by little to say, Decoding provokes ones curiosity. It contrasts similar moments lived by different people on opposite sides of the globe. It intentionally goads the reader to reflect on the state of human condition while guiding them to the realization that although we are different, we are one. Decodings ultimate purpose is to deliver the message of compassion and respect to oneself, fellow humans and hosting earth. The secret ingredient remains love.

About the Author

Lina Farra was born in Beirut and grew up during the Lebanese war. This taught her to appreciate beauty and recognize flaws. Throughout her journey, she has lived in Vienna, New York, Washington, DC, and more recently the United Arab Emirates. In so doing, she absorbed the cultures of each place. Vienna influenced her taste, New York challenged her imagination, Washington fed her intellect, and Dubai shored her up with the East. Lina believes in “clarity versus clutter,” in design “less is better,” in business “simplify to exemplify.” In accepting the yin and the yang as well as the ebb and the flow of life is a confirmation that equilibrium is a movement and not a point. Nothing is always right or wrong. Just keep moving. MBA, Fuqua School of Business, DUKE University Professional Photography, Washington School of Photography BBA, American University of Beirut

INTRODUCTION

Our analog world has been reduced to bits and bytes. According to artificial intelligence, color code black is #000000 and color code white is #FFFFFF. Color is not a constant but a variable. It is a function of the light hitting the object. Similar to life, this leaves everything open to the subjectivity of the perceiver.

000000 | FFFFFF decoding is a book about decoding life and my interpretation of it through my lens. I have interjected the images with some words that were in me and insisted on coming out. My drive has always been to learn passionately, apply intelligently and share wisely. I put this book together as an expression of my mind's eye. I share it with those who are curious to venture beyond the norm and accept the challenge of the daily human existence. My message is one of compassion and respect to oneself, fellow humans and hosting earth. I believe that education raises the level of consciousness irrespective of gender or race. The secret ingredient remains love.

Special thanks to my children Celine, Rami and Marya, Rania Fathallah, Ferdinando de Caro, Charlie Laba, Diana Atassi and Dalia Rafeh who helped me make it happen. Lina Farra
