Although this series demonstrated that the Star Trek franchise had finally played itself out, Enterprise -- which takes place prior to the time period established in the original series -- was not without a fair share of intriguing episodes and captivating concepts. The 2002-3 season reflects the influence on chief writer Rick Berman of both the original Star Trek and Next Generation, and references to these shows are sprinkled throughout the 25 episodes. The season opener, "Shockwave, Part Two," finds Enterprise Captain Jonathan Archer (Scott Bakula) plunged into a chaotic, pre-Federation world when the ship is jolted out of its timeline. "Minefield," a particularly suspenseful episode, begins with the ship entering an outer-space minefield. When one of the devices attaches itself to the Enterprise's hull, Lt. Commander Malcolm Reed (Dominic Keating) goes out to dislodge it, only to become trapped between hull and mine. T'Pol (Jolene Blalock) takes center stage in "The Seventh," when her confrontation with another Vulcan unleashes repressed memories of a traumatic incident. Enterprise's recurring villains this season are the treacherous Sulibans, but malevolent forces from the original Star Trek pop up to cause trouble in two episodes: "Marauders," which features the Klingons; and "Future Tense," which reintroduces the Tholians. The show's referential bent didn't endear it to large numbers of Trek traditionalists, yet Enterprise built its own fan base during its tenure. If you're one of them, this box set is just what the Doctor (Phlox, in this case) ordered.
