About the Author

Jean is well qualified to write The Alpine Ski Touring Book. Jean was AT skiing before most people heard of it. He wrote his first book on skiing while he was living year round in a tent for while teaching ski touring at Bear Valley, California. He later moved to Aspen, Colorado where he co-founded Aspen Alpine Guides along with fellow skier/climber Patrick Griffin. He was also a member of Aspen Mountain Rescue. In addition to three books he has published over 40 articles in Ski, Skiing and Outside Magazines. He received his doctorate in Exercise Physiology from the University of Northern Colorado. His dissertation research examined the four modes of snow locomotion that includes Alpine Ski Touring, Snowshoeing, Hiking and XC Skiing. It was awarded the Charles Houston Grant from the Wilderness Medical Society. He has skied and climbed all over the world including Europe, South America and the Himalayas. He did sport science research at Everest Base Camp after taking his students on the 100 mile Hillary approach trek. He taught high altitude physiology at Kathmandu University. He designed and skied the longest Alpine Ski Tour in America of 170 miles in 28 days of snow camping that crosses the Colorado Rockies from East to West. This is his third book on Alpine Ski Touring. He can often be found up-hill skiing at Eldora Ski Area above his home in Boulder, Colorado.
