About the Author

John Fiske (1842–1901) was an American philosopher and historian. He began his writing career in 1861, contributing regularly to American and British periodicals. He wrote many books and essays on the philosophical interpretation of Charles Darwin’s theory of evolution and was a popular lecturer on the topic as well as on American history.
