About the Author

Lewis Nathaniel Chase (1873-1937) taught English at Duke University—where his papers on Poe are archived—as well as at Columbia University and several other colleges outside the United States. After a brief stint studying stage dancing, he became a Poe scholar; his other works include The English Heroic Play: A Critical Description of the Rhymed Tragedy of the Restoration (1903), and an introduction to Emerson’s Essay on Compensation.
