In the fall of 1812, a crime against Literature occurred. Struggling novelist Jane Austen submitted her second novel, Erotic Pride and Prejudice to Thomas Egerton of Whitehall for publication. While impressed with her work, Egerton told Austen that he would not publish it because it would be seen by the general public as obscene, and he could not afford the scandal. Desperate for money, Austen pleaded with the publisher to reconsider. Egerton said that he would only do so if significant alterations were made. Austen immediately agreed, and in January of the following year Pride and Prejudice was published for the first time.
In spite of the forced edits, Pride and Prejudice has gone on to tremendous success, being hailed as a masterpiece for the past 200-years. Yet, as one reads it, they cannot help to feel that something is missing.
