British author Hilary Mantel (1952-2022) was a two-time winner of the Man Booker Prize for each of the first two volumes in her internationally bestselling Cromwell Trilogy: Wolf Hall and Bring Up the Bodies. She was the first woman to have received this prestigious award twice. She also wrote a number of other prizewinning novels, a memoir, two books of short stories, and various articles for the London Review of Books. She was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in 2006 and Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire (DBE) in 2014.
