Narrator Angela Dawe draws the listener back into the world of the Psy-Changelings, which is made up of humans, changelings, and psychics. Payal Rao and Canto Mercant are two Psys who survived a brutal childhood event together and find each other again as adults. Dawe’s smooth, even pacing reflects the tight control most of the Psys have on their emotions. As Payal starts to experience emotions with Canto, Dawe evokes that change, allowing the listener to feel it along with her. One feels the tension rising as Canto and Payal struggle to repair the Psy-net that all Psys are linked to and need for their survival.
