About the Author

Description: This book is an excellent, comprehensive, and up-to date reference for any nurse seeking to learn about advanced nursing practice.
Purpose: The purpose of this book is to provide an in-depth discussion of the various advanced practice nursing roles (e.g., educator, administrator, clinical nurse leader) and advanced practice registered nursing roles (e.g., nurse practitioner, certified nurse midwife, certified registered nurse anesthetist, clinical nurse specialist) while outlining role preparation and expectations. The authors very ably meet the objectives for the entire book and all 17 chapters.
Audience: This book is an excellent resource for nurse educators or students with an interest in advanced nursing practice. Students may find it particularly interesting because of the details aligned with each role including the detailed expectations and competencies. Individuals interested in learning more about the various advanced practice roles and distinguishing characteristics may find this to be an important read. Faculty who teach in these programs will find a wide assortment of resources to enhance the teaching/learning experience.
Features: The 628-page book includes six sections and 17 chapters. The sections include role preparation and expectations, advanced nursing roles, advanced practice registered nursing roles, the leadership journey, scholarship for advanced roles and professional practice, and provide in-depth discussions and resources in an engaging, reader-friendly, and informative manner. Each chapter is well-constructed with a number of learning objectives, key terms, resources, chapter summaries, and chapter highlights. The authors do a great job of distinguishing between the advanced nursing role and advanced practice registered nursing role, and they fill a gap in the nursing literature by acknowledging the roles of nurse educator and administrator as advanced professional opportunities. The discussion on the attributes and potential contributions of a nurse scholar is important, as this is an expectation of the advanced practice nursing role. The chapter on nursing entrepreneurs is another interesting read for nurses seeking to become entrepreneurs working outside of traditional nursing roles. Overall, the tables, resources, personal stories, chapter highlights, and reflective questions are features that enhance the joy of reading the book. The authors are recognized nurse leaders with expertise in nursing education, critical care, women's health, academia, and leadership within and outside nursing.
Assessment: This book is an excellent resource for nursing students and nurse educators.
